Attendance Policy

Hello and welcome to the Absence Reporting Page! Please read the information below carefully. If you have any questions, contact Mr. Whaley directly at traviswhaley@misdmail.org

Absence Policies from the Handbook:

For known absences (weddings, doctor appointments, etc.), students must post on the Absence Request Link located at www.summitband.com at least one week prior to a rehearsal/event absence or two weeks prior to an absence to a scheduled performance for it to be considered excused. A follow-up doctor’s note/email is required upon return from the absence when applicable.

For unplanned, emergency absences (personal illness, death in the family, etc.), parents will need to fill out the Absence Request Form within 24 hours after the student’s return.

Unexcused Absences: In order to retain a spot in the competitive show, a student cannot miss rehearsal without the proper notification to the directors. If a student is absent from rehearsal for any reason without notification, parent contact must be made before the student is allowed to attend the game/competition for that week. If there is a legitimate reason for missing rehearsal and/or a note is provided upon return, the student will be allowed to perform that week. If the reason is not deemed legitimate, the student will be asked to not participate in the game or performance that week. This will “reset” at the beginning of each week. This includes all after-school, evening, or morning marching rehearsals.

Excused Absences or Partial Absences will be granted for family emergency, illness, religious observance, college visit, MISD activity/sport event (not regular practice), or other extenuating circumstance.

Please note that student jobs, non-school sponsored activities, SAT and ACT test preparation, and drivers education courses will not be considered for an Excused Absence or Excused Partial Absence.

Unexcused absences/tardies can affect your grade, part assignment, and/or performance status. Ultimately, the directors have final say on determining whether an absence is Excused or Unexcused.

  1. Requesting an Excused Absence
    • This is for students requesting to miss an entire rehearsal/event. A parent/guardian must fill out the form below.
  2. Requesting an Excused Partial Absence (Tardy / Early Dismissal)
    • This is for students requesting to miss part of a rehearsal/event. A parent/guardian must fill out the form below.
  3. Emergency Absence or Tardy
    • This is for students with an illness, emergency appointments, or a family emergency. A parent/guardian must fill out the form below.

Students that attempt to deceive the directors regarding the nature of their absence will be referred to their Assistant Principal for disciplinary action.
