Summit Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble at Summit High School is one of the most popular organizations within the band department. Membership is selective and is determined through auditions in the Fall semester, typically rehearses twice a week before or after school between January and April.
The Jazz Ensemble performs at one of our largest fundraisers of the year, the Jazz Dinner Dance, as well as select contests throughout the DFW metroplex. The goal of the Jazz Ensemble is to expose SHS band students to the medium of jazz, the various styles in jazz literature, as well as the art of improvisation.
Band members enrolled in Jazz Band must also be concurrently enrolled in a concert band. Members of this ensemble are expected to be the hardest working and most talented students in the band program. The band consists of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, drum set, bass, guitar, and piano. Admittance into this band is expected of the Wind Ensemble students on these instruments. This ensemble focuses on big band jazz tunes as well as improv and theory.
